For more than 130 years, the National Geographic Society has funded outstanding individuals dedicated to scientific discovery and knowledge of our world. Today these people make up the community of National Geographic explorers who continue to push the boundaries of knowledge, discovering new aspects of the natural and cultural world, to illuminate and protect the wonders of our planet.

Gael Almeida is the Executive Director for Latin America at the National Geographic Society; her work includes searching for new projects; supporting Latin Americans who receive funding; and activating collaborations between the network of Latin American Explorers and regional partners to create long-term changes in the region. Gael has more than 25 years of experience coordinating conservation initiatives, collective impact and working with interdisciplinary groups, as well as scientific and environmental communication.
